Whether you are a snorer yourself or you happen to share a house with someone who does, you will know the disruption that snoring can have on your sleep routine. With an estimated 40% of adults being affected by snoring, it is no wonder that people around the country are searching for ways to minimise the effects.
Not only does snoring lead to reduced rest for the sufferer and those around them, but it can also result in reduced mental function, increased cardiovascular disease, emotional turmoil and relationship issues. In some cases, it can even be an early indicator of obstructive sleep apnoea which can mean that the sufferer stops breathing intermittently throughout the night.
Luckily, there are plenty of ways to reduce or minimize the effects of snoring, such as:
-
Side sleeping
Sleeping on your back means that the tongue falls back onto the throat and blocks the airway, making the sound of snoring even louder. Changing position to sleep on your side will encourage the airway to stay open and therefore reduce the sound.
-
Lose weight
Having a large neck or carrying extra weight in this area will make it much harder for air to get through when the muscles are relaxed. Losing weight should help to reduce this and encourage better airflow.
-
Quit smoking and drinking
Both alcohol and nicotine are known for making snoring even worse. This is because alcohol relaxes muscles even more than normal while smoking irritates the airways and causes congestion.
-
Reduce allergens
Keeping pets out of the bedroom, regularly washing bedding and hoovering the mattress should help to reduce allergens in the bedroom. Dust mites and pet dander are well known for exacerbating snoring symptoms, so try to maintain a squeaky-clean bedroom to avoid the effects.
-
Use technology
Investing in a smart pillow such as the Zeeq is a great way to reduce snoring and keep partners happy! When it detects that snoring has reached a certain decibel level, it will gently vibrate to let you know that it’s time to change position without waking you up.
