The sleep phase is when the body mends and repairs damaged cells and tissues. As our bodies rest, they produce and regulate the hormones that we need in order to function on a day to day basis. When we experience sleep deprivation, the body does not have a chance to properly regulate hormones and carry out repairs to the body. This can leave us feeling sluggish the next day, as well as creating wrinkles and eye bags. It also means that the immune system does not have the opportunity to build up strength, making it less able to protect the body from viruses and infections.
When we experience sleep deprivation, our bodies release the stress hormone cortisol in response. This hormone is known as the “ageing hormone” because of its ageing effects on the body. Cortisol increases blood pressure and blood sugar levels, hardens arteries, increases fat storage and lowers growth hormone. It also plays a part in muscle and collagen loss, which is why it causes wrinkles.
When we get enough sleep, our bodies are able to effectively mend and repair itself while regulating cortisol production, making it less likely to have an effect on our skin and health.
So, how else can you limit premature ageing?
- Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables
They are packed with natural antioxidants and are great for keeping the skin healthy.
- Quit smoking
Smoking damages the elasticity of your skin and narrows blood vessels, making it harder for blood flow to get to the skin.
- Use SPF
Both UVA and UVB rays are proven to accelerate ageing of the skin.
- Drink plenty of water
Water helps to keep the skin hydrated. Limit alcohol intake as this has the opposite effect,
- Reduce stress
Stress produces more cortisol, so reduce stress as much as possible.
