Sprinkling a few drops of calming essential oils around your pillow will help to trigger a relaxation response in your mind and body. Use lavender which is known for promoting deep and restful sleep.
You know the score – yawning is contagious! You can even catch it from yourself. Even if you don’t feel like yawning, simply mimicking the action of it will trick your brain into thinking that it’s time for sleep.
Do the 4-7-8 breathing exercise
This is a great way to get your mind focused on your breathing and your body prepared for a night of rest.
- Start by exhaling all of the air from your lungs through your mouth
- Close your mouth and inhale through your nose while mentally counting to four
- Hold your breath for a count of seven
- Exhale through your mouth to a count of eight
- Repeat the cycle three more times
If you prefer to visualise as you breathe, imagine that you are inhaling a bright white light, fill your lungs completely then exhale through your mouth while imagining the light flowing from your lungs. If your mind starts to wander, gently bring your thoughts back to your breathing.
Repeat a mantra
Another good way to occupy the mind with relaxation is to think of a mantra and repeat it in your head. Think of a calming phrase and focus on the words as you say them in your head. It could be something like “I am sleepy and relaxed” or “My mind and body are calm.”
Plug into a guided meditation
If all else fails, play a guided meditation through your smart pillow and relax into sleep as the
narrator guides you to a state of calm and tranquillity.
