Sleep hypnosis involves listening to cues from a hypnotherapist which are designed to help you sink into a dream-like state using the power of suggestion.

There are many different approaches to hypnosis, but essentially, they are like guided meditations, drawing the listener further into a state of relaxation so that they find it easier to fall asleep.

Does it work?

Well, it all depends on how suggestible and receptive to hypnosis that the listener is. If the listener is open to the effects of hypnosis and genuinely believes that it will work on them, they are more likely to experience the results of hypnosis. Hypnosis can also work on those who don’t necessarily believe that it is going to help them but are receptive to the outcome anyway.

However, there is some research that suggests that some people are simply not receptive to hypnosis techniques at all. It is estimated that around a quarter of the world’s population is simply not suggestible enough to experience the results of hypnosis at all, even if they believe in the outcome.

In short, it is definitely worth trying sleep hypnosis out if you feel you might be receptive to it. But there are alternatives if you feel that it isn’t right for you.

If you’re a lifelong insomniac, it may be worth looking into cognitive behavioural therapy. These types of sessions analyse your sleep routine and ways of thinking about sleep and help you to come up with new patterns to achieve a better night’s rest. By looking at your current habits and thought processes about sleep, you can identify ways to adapt and change them. This could be by incorporating meditation, breathing exercises, a strict wake-sleep cycle or more exercise.
