Research carried out in 1999 found that the ancient Chinese technique had a noticeable effect on participants who were experiencing insomnia symptoms. In 2004, a further study found that acupuncture increased the production of melatonin in patients experiencing anxiety. This had the effect of helping them to fall asleep faster, stay asleep for longer and experience overall reduced stress levels.
So, how does it work?
The principle of acupuncture works on the basis that the body has life energy flowing through it. Sometimes, the flow of energy can be inhibited or blocked, causing symptoms such as insomnia or illness. Long, thin needles are painlessly inserted into various points of the body, known as meridians, to help unblock the energy and help it to flow again.
It has been shown to have a positive effect on those suffering from sleep apnoea, perhaps because it helps to strengthen the tong end prevent it from blocking the airway.
Is it right for you?
If you have been suffering from insomnia for some time, it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor first to see if there are any underlying health issues that need to be addressed. The next step is to analyse your sleep habits and determine whether anything can be improved. Could you introduce more exercise? Cut out caffeine? Quit smoking before bed? Once you have addressed these points, then perhaps it’s time to look at alternative therapies such as acupuncture. It is recommended that several sessions or more are needed to feel the effects, so don’t be surprised if it doesn’t work for you straight away. Always seek a qualified, experienced and recommended practitioner who explains the procedure thoroughly before going ahead with any treatments.
