Think a few nights of tossing and turning aren’t enough to have an impact on your body? Think again. 1. Depression

Consistently bad sleep patterns can have a huge impact on the chances of getting depression. A study of 10,000 participants in 2007 found that those with insomnia were 5 times more likely to develop depression than those without.

 

2. Ages skin

That’s right, you can forget about all those expensive creams! If you aren’t getting enough sleep, then you will develop wrinkles. This is because the body releases cortisol when it is deprived of sleep, and cortisol breaks down collagen.

 

3. Makes you gain weight

A study conducted in 2004 found that those who sleep less than six hours per day were 30% more likely to gain weight than those who slept for the recommended 7-9 hours.  

 

4. Kills sex drive

Sleep deprivation is directly linked to a lower libido and decreased interest in sex. Lack of energy, exhaustion, and feelings of tension may play a part in this.

 

5. Causes serious health problems

Sleep deprivation can increase the risk of heart disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes to name but a few. Studies have shown that up to 90% of insomnia sufferers have at least one additional health complaint.

 

So, what can you do about it? Insomnia is a tough one to beat, but it is not impossible. Regular exercise, meditation and maintaining good standards of sleep hygiene are key. Use a sleep monitor to track your nightly movements for a better understanding of your sleep cycle and how to fix it.
